Cottey College and Central Methodist Join Forces for Future Music Teachers

Cottey College students who want to become music teachers now have a clear path for earning their credentials. Cottey College, in Nevada, Missouri, and Central Methodist University, in Fayette, Missouri, have reached an agreement allowing seamless transfer from one institution to the other. Cottey students who earn an Associate in Arts – Music (AAM) will be able enroll in the Bachelor of Music Education (BME) program at Central Methodist without leaving Cottey’s campus.

Music students can remain at Cottey and study through CMU’s College of Graduate and Extended Studies or transfer to Central Methodist’s College of Liberal Arts and Sciences (Fayette campus). CMU will credit designated Cottey courses as defined in the agreement, simplifying the transfer process.

“Cottey offers a number of excellent bachelor’s degree programs. When we have an outstanding program, such as music, that does not yet offer a B.A. on our campus, we look for educational partners, such as Central Methodist University, with whom we can collaborate to create a baccalaureate that meets the needs of our students,” said Dr. Jann Weitzel, President of Cottey College. “We are extremely pleased that CMU has become an educational partner with us.”

Cottey Vice President for Academic Affairs Dr. Joann Bangs worked with CMU Provost Dr. Rita Gulstad to finalize the articulation agreement. The agreement will simplify many aspects of the transfer process for students interested in music education, says Dr. Jackie Lordo, Cottey Assistant Professor of Music and Music Department Coordinator.

“Students in this program will be able to focus on their development as musicians while participating in the many opportunities that Cottey provides,” Lordo says. “CMU has a reputation for producing outstanding music educators, and we look forward to this relationship.”
