Cottey Student Selected to Harvard Stem Cell Institute Internship Program

Date Posted: March 17, 2020 Author: Steve Reed

Cottey College student Rose Sheila Atukunda has been selected for the Harvard Stem Cell Institute Internship Program (HIP). Over 600 candidates submitted applications for this year’s program and Atukunda’s was one of only 20 that met or exceeded the rigorous review standards.

“I am so excited to go to Harvard this summer,” said Atukunda, a sophomore biology student. “If I were still in Uganda, I don’t think I would have had this opportunity but being at Cottey gave me the platform I needed to get to Harvard.”

The program begins on June 8, and during this 10-week summer internship, Atukunda will live in the Undergraduate Research Village on Harvard’s Cambridge campus. The internship selection comes with a $5,000 stipend to cover travel, meals, and personal expenses.

“Rose is just another example of Cottey’s outstanding scholars and leaders,” said Dr. Jann Weitzel, President of the College. “Her selection also reflects well on the education and preparation our students receive from our faculty. We are so proud of her selection.”

The HIP program offers a superb educational experience and promotes individual development both personally and professionally.
