DEPARTMENT OF THEATRE PRESENTS THE WOLVES, FEB. 25-27

Date Posted: February 22, 2022 Author: Steve Reed

The Cottey College Department of Theatre presents Sarah Delappe’s THE WOLVES on Friday and Saturday, February 25 and 26, at 8 p.m., and Sunday, February 27, at 3 p.m. in the Haidee and Allen Wild Center for the Arts. The production is directed by first-year speech and theatre faculty member Peter Carver.

Pulitzer Prize finalist THE WOLVES chronicles six Saturday mornings in the lives of a soccer team somewhere in suburban America as they prepare for a game. The young women discuss everything from genocide to menstrual cycles to boys to literature to each other, and a group of girls whom at first seem indistinguishable as each is referred to by only her number and all are clad in the same jersey only bearing her number quickly become identifiable and different. In the course of six short weeks, the Wolves deal with love, loss, and identity in ways that real teenagers do.

Director Peter Carver says of the play, “THE WOLVES is a rare work of art that has no need for male tropes to create a riveting story of competition, conflict, and cohesion. I remember high school and how tough it was to establish a positive self-concept amidst all the relational aggression that was happening below the surface. We all have a desire to be seen and heard by someone other than our parents, and we all want to make an impact. I am excited for the audience to immerse themselves in these given circumstances surrounded by such compelling characters.”

The cast is #11 Greta Hundtofte, #25 Klair Soukup, #13 Mya Briscoe, #46 Luxy Pearce, #2 Eden Weatherall, #7 Anastasia Beard-Julich, #14 Sasha Smith, #8 Gracie Wilborn, #00 Dyllen Andrews, and Soccer Mom, Alexis Ward. Kordelia Taylor is the stage manager. Scenic design is by Taylor Jordan and lighting design and technical direction are by professor Laura Chaney.

Playwright’s Horizon Theatre School produced a workshop production of THE WOLVES in 2015 in association with Clubbed Thumb, where the play had been developed previously. The world-premiere of THE WOLVES was produced by the Playwright’s Realm on September 8, 2016. THE WOLVES is the winner of the Sky Cooper New American Play Prize at the Marin Theatre Company, Mill Valley, California. THE WOLVES was produced by the Lincoln Center in New York City in 2017.

Tickets are available at the door and are $5 for adults and $4 for those under age 18 or over age 62. THE WOLVES contains mature content and is not suitable for children.

The Center for the Arts is on the northeast corner of Austin and Tower streets in Nevada, Missouri.
