Selena Kohel, Ph.D.
Associate Professor of Psychology
Dr. Kohel received her B.A. in psychology and piano performance from the University of Wisconsin-Madison, her M.A. in student personnel administration in higher education from New York University, and her Ph.D. in interdisciplinary studies, with concentrations in counseling psychology and social psychology, from the University of Wisconsin-Madison.
She has worked in a variety of roles with an array of students at various institutions. Before falling in love with teaching, Dr. Kohel was employed as a student personnel administrator – advising individual students on academic, career, and personal concerns; overseeing the development of student organizations, student leaders, and student staff; and facilitating diversity programming. She’s worked at New York University, Columbia University, and the University of Wisconsin-Madison.
On her way to and after falling in love with teaching, Dr. Kohel has taught classes at Marymount Manhattan College, the University of Wisconsin-Madison, Madison Area Technical College, Northwestern University: Center for Talent Development, University of Wisconsin: Independent Learning, and Pennsylvania State University: The Behrend College.

Dr. Kohel likes to be playful in her classes but she’s also known to be serious. She’s a strong believer that every student brings with her a rich history and body of knowledge all her own, and she sees learning as a sharing process among everyone in the classroom, where co-creating also can take place. Additionally, she’s a strong believer in helping students develop their life skills, especially in regard to communicating, perspective-taking, critical-thinking, and acting in a responsible manner.
Dr. Kohel’s research interests include: teaching for participatory democracy, teaching for cultural competence, and exploring the role of social categorization in social inequality.
