Amy M. Ruetten’s favorite responsibilities are assisting with scholarship awards to Cottey College students, and being a leader for the sophomore year trips. She feels that it is gratifying to be part of the team that rewards hardworking young women, and enjoys seeing sophomores gain confidence in navigating new cities and cultures. Ruetten has seen first-hand the importance of scholarship and international experiences to students not only financially, but also personally.
Amy M. Ruetten earned her Master of Business Administration in 2004 from Baker University, and her Bachelor of Science in Accounting and Finance from the University of Wisconsin-Platteville in 1988.
She became Interim Vice President for Administration and Finance for Cottey College in July 2013 and was named Vice President for Administration and Finance in January 2014. In this role, Ruetten participates on the President’s Council as a member of the leadership team, which provides current and future direction of the college. She manages and directs all fiscal operations for the college. Ruetten supervises seven business units responsible for all financial activities, daily business operating activities, budgeting and reporting, human resources, plant, food service, bookstore, service center operations, and information technology. Ruetten provides consultation to department heads and other college leadership in planning initiatives, through management and financial information analysis, reports and recommendations. She assists with the development and revision of the annual budget in coordination with the college leadership team. Ruetten oversees the approval and processing of revenues, expenditures, department budgets, and the maintenance of accounts and ledgers, ensuring compliance with appropriate college regulations and policies, and ensuring maintenance of appropriate internal control safeguards. Ruetten established and maintains financial records systems and prepares financial statements, financial reports, special analysis, monthly variance reports and information reports. Ruetten manages staff responsible for accounts payable, accounts receivable, billing and payroll processing. She requests the Federal Title IV drawdowns, calculates the Title IV refunds, and assists with scholarship awards on a case by case basis with Financial Aid. She coordinates the preparation for all audit work papers, writes financial statements, implements audit recommendations and works with auditors on operations, IRS reporting, and other regulations as needed. She records and monitors transaction detail for 23 investment managers within an endowment investment pool of approximately $85 million.
Amy M. Ruetten was Controller for Cottey College from July 1996 to June 2013.
Ruetten was Accountant – Auditor for BKD, LLP in Joplin, MO, from July 1994 – June 1996. In this role, she supervised the performance of all tasks relating to audit engagements, including planning, client communications, field work, report preparation, management letters, and evaluation of internal controls. She ensured client compliance in accordance with the federal Single Audit Act of 1984. Ruetten developed tax strategies which offered clients not only current tax savings but also future benefits.
Amy M. Ruetten was Accountant at Lindgren, Callihan, Van Osdol & Co., LTD., in Freeport, IL, from 1988 – 1994. She prepared and reviewed tax returns at individual, partnership, corporate and fiduciary levels. Ruetten developed and administered audit strategies for corporate, governmental, and nonprofit agencies. She supervised the performance of audit engagements including community colleges, and assisted clients in the conversion of accounting records from manual to computerized ledger systems.
