Please see the following for the College’s response to the COVID-19 virus. Cottey College has gathered the following questions and answers. This is a rapidly evolving situation and these items can be adjusted at any point. The college will continue to update this information in the coming weeks.


Question: I have items I need immediately for academic or medical; how can I get those?

Answer: Students can request that items needed for classes or to manage health conditions be shipped to your permanent residence. Please email Connie Allen with your specific items needed and we will work to get those to you.

Question: Can I drive to campus or have someone pick up my belongings on my behalf?

Answer: Students who are able to arrange coming to campus or arrange someone picking up items on their behalf need to know the following:

  1. Residence Hall Staff will coordinate the packing and loading of belongings.
  2. Students will not be allowed back into their rooms or out of their cars on campus.
  3. Our Residence Hall staff will pack items for you and have a designated loading zone for you to drive up and sit in your vehicle while they load items.

If you would like to utilize this option, please contact the Director of Housing Cindy Spencer to arrange a pick up time.

Question: If I am unable to drive to campus, how will I get my belongings?

Answer: We are working on additional information for students who are unable to come and pick up items on campus. We will get this information out as soon as possible. If there are items that are necessary for your health or coursework please contact Connie Allen

Financial Aid

Question: Will I be refunded for my housing and dining plans?

Answer: Cottey College is currently awaiting guidance from the National Association of Student Financial Aid Administrators. We look forward to sharing this information as soon as it’s available.

Question: What can I do with my Cottey Cash/Chellie Bucks?


  1. For students not returning to campus next semester, you will be able to purchase items from the bookstore either online or by phone which can then be sent to your home. Contact Lois at and she will be able to assist.
  2. For students who are returning next semester, we will accept 2019-2020 Cottey Cash through the end of the fall semester.

Question: As a student worker, will I continue to be paid?

Answer: All student employees will continue to be paid. Students who are off campus will not report to their position and will still be paid. Students who are on campus will continue to report to their on-campus offices.

Campus Services

Question: What Campus Services are closed?

Answer:  The following buildings and services on campus are closed through the remainder of the semester.

  • Chellie Club
  • Fitness Center
  • Gymnasium
  • Library Building access for students (online resources will be available)
  • Swimming Pool
  • Music Practice Rooms by appointment only for those students permitted to stay on campus. Contact Dr. Lordo to make an appointment.

Question: How does this impact Counseling and Health Services?

Answer: Any student may be seen for distant counseling as requested by the student.  We may provide scheduled counseling sessions by telephone, email, Zoom, or other electronic means during regular counseling hours of Monday-Friday, 8-5 p.m. beginning March 23, 2020. Students who are currently seeing Mrs. Simpson or Mrs. Donahoo on campus will be notified individually by email to assess the student’s on-going need and/or distance counseling preference. Students may contact the counselors at or ndonahoo@cottey.eduwith additional questions.

For now, health services for students currently on campus will be provided on a limited basis for basic health care needs from 8:30-9:30 a.m. on MWF  Students not on campus may contact Robin Conner at or 417-667-8181, ext. 2157 for health service questions.  We will coordinate a transition between Cottey College Health Services and our students’ home physicians.

Question: Will the library be open for students?

Answer: Library services will still be available in electronic format.  The library building will be closed until April 3rd. If you have any questions, email the library at or call 417-667-8181 x2153.

Question: Will there be a shuttle to the Kansas City airport for those students who wish to leave campus for the remainder of the semester?

Answer: Yes. A shuttle is scheduled for Thursday, March 19, at 6 a.m. The fee is $40 payable by cash, Cottey Cash, or credit/debit card. You will need to take your belongings with you. Please sign up with Shaun West in the Student Life office beginning Monday, March 16. Contact her at or 417-667-8181, ext. 2126. Please arrive by 5:45 a.m. to load luggage so the bus may leave promptly at 6 a.m.

When available, students may also contract a private driver through Shaun West in the Student Life office. Students should coordinate with Shaun before booking their flights.


Question: How will I complete my coursework?

Answer: Currently, the faculty and staff at Cottey are creating alternative means of instruction. Each of your professors will be reaching out to you with instructions on how to complete your coursework in the near future. Please monitor your emails closely for instructions on coursework. Question: I have an internship or am a student teacher; what do I need to do?

Question: Will I be able to finish my coursework if I don’t have internet access?

Answer: We are exploring the use of teaching methods that extend beyond solely online learning. Please contact your professors and make your individual needs known to them.


Question: Are campus offices open?

Answer: Campus is still open. Departments and offices are still open and available via email or phone.

Question: Am I able to live on campus and travel?

Answer: We are recommending that students living on campus not travel further than 50 miles from campus.

Question: Will Cottey still have Commencement this spring?

Answer: We are planning to host Cottey’s first ever virtual commencement. Per the guidelines of the CDC on large gatherings, we decided it was in the best interest of everyone to begin planning now on hosting this special day online instead of delaying the decision. We will have more details in the coming weeks as we get closer to the event.

Question: What if I’m willing to self-quarantine on-campus in order to finish the semester on-campus?

Answer: The College does not have adequate facilities to quarantine or isolate a large number of students. Thus this is not an option that the College is able to provide.

Question: What should I do with my passdowns?

Answer: All passdowns can be left in your suite or room and will be redistributed for next year. If you are wanting certain passdowns to go to specific people, please have them clearly group and labeled. If there is a specific request, students can email Megan Vincent at with a description of the item and who they want it designated for.

 Question: What will happen to my mail and packages?

Answer: For students who are now living at home, we will forward all mail to the home location we have on file. We are unable to forward Fedex and UPS packages to your home address. Please work with the sender of the package on getting those sent to your home address. For students who are still on campus, mail and package delivery will still occur.
