Date Posted: May 4, 2026 Author: Jessie Mick

There are many career options and specializations for those with a BA in education. In this article, we’ll explore the most popular options!

Certified Classroom Teacher

First and foremost, to teach in most states in the U.S., you’ll need to become a certified classroom teacher. The requirements vary from state to state, but they are usually similar. Furthermore, most states practice reciprocity, allowing you to teach in their state as long as you are certified in another one.

To become certified, most states require a 4-year degree in an educator preparation program. These programs will prepare you for the other certification requirements, such as student teaching, a knowledge assessment on  your subject area, and a portfolio.

Elementary School Teacher

After becoming a certified classroom teacher, specializing in elementary education is a great option. In this job you will work with grades k-5 to build foundational skills. This career requires a lot of creativity and understanding of childhood development.

Middle School Teacher

Another option for specialization after becoming a certified classroom teacher is middle school, which includes grades 6-8 in most school districts.  You can specialize in a variety of subjects, such as English, math, history, or science.

High School Teacher

If you choose this career, be prepared to teach more advanced subjects. These grade levels focus on preparing students for college or to join the workforce.

Career Counselor

This position is in place to help students. For this career you will be:

  • Administering assessments
  • Guiding  students in choosing career paths or college majors
  • Developing career readiness programs
  • Supporting students with internship or scholarship applications

Special Education Teacher

If you select this career pathway your tasks will be teaching students with learning, emotional, or physical disabilities. In this career path you get to work on more individualized instructions to support each student.

School Administrator

This career typically requires further education, such as a master’s degree. Some of the roles you may have as a school administrator are principle, assistant principle, district coordinator, and curriculum director.

Online Educator

As e-learning becomes increasingly popular, full-time online educator positions are more accessible than ever. These roles entail teaching or tutoring students online. This offers flexible work schedules and the ability to work from home.

There are also opportunities for part-time work tutoring students online. This is a great way for those in the education field to supplement their income.
