Hands-On Business

Business Program Experiential Learning Opportunities

Students have the opportunity to manage Cottey’s Spirit Shop, focusing on areas of marketing, finance, and operations. In this student-run business, students are encouraged to propose data-based alternatives, make decisions, assess their outcomes, and demonstrate lessons learned.

Students can take risks and succeed or fail in a safe environment. In 2019-2023, students applied this learning by managing the Chellie Club, the campus diner.  Beginning Fall, 2023, students moved to manage the Spirit Shop.

Funds are made available to students who have declared a baccalaureate major in business administration to focus on an in-depth internship experience. Students are expected to develop meaningful internship experiences in partnership with identified supervisors. Students showcase their experience at a campus presentation in the fall following the internship.

Students can apply for a stipend to assist their internship experience!

Students can participate in experiential learning through the stock trading lab by signing up for a 1-year commitment to participate. Fees are paid through the Clark Institute.

Students receive $50,000 in simulated funds to invest through StockTrak. Students present their learnings and experience at the end of the year.

Students participate in state and international competitions.

Past field trips have included faculty led field trips to City Market in Kansas City, Global Entrepreneurial Week, Entrepreneurial Resource Field Trips, IKEA, World Trade Center Import/Export Center, and more.

In addition to the specific certifications listed below, students can apply for funding to obtain a certification in any field of their interest.

Certified Global Business Professional (CGBP)

This certification is through NASBITE International.

After taking INB 345 Exports Policies and Procedures, students can sign up to take the Certified Global Business Professional (CGBP) certification exam. Cost is reimbursed upon successfully passing the exam through the funds from the Clark Institute for Women in Business.

QuickBooks

Students in the Entrepreneurial Lab use QuickBooks for the financial management of the Spirit Shop.  These students have the opportunity to take courses and become QuickBooks certified.
