Sociology

Cottey offers a minor in sociology.

Program Description

Sociology at Cottey College gives an in-depth exploration of human society and the complex web of social behavior. Our students engage with pressing social issues and public policy. As students cultivate a sociological perspective, they enhance their analytical and observational skills, empowering them to navigate and understand the complexities of human interactions in a rapidly changing world.

Signature Courses

  • SOC/ANT 235 Race, Class, Gender, and Sexuality

This course focuses on the experiences of diverse groups within and outside the United States. It studies race, ethnicity, class, gender, sexuality, and other identities as socially constructed and intersecting. Students explore how these social identities and social institutions shape individual and larger group behaviors and expectations. One recently adopted course project analyzes particular social media platforms through the lens of two or more of these social identities.

  • SOC/CRM 250 Deviant Behavior

This course delves into the complex nature of deviant behavior, examining how society defines and shapes what is considered deviant. Students will explore the social forces influencing deviance, the motivations behind such behaviors, and their consequences. The course also addresses the evolving nature of deviance over time, highlighting the impact of globalization on traditional and emerging forms of deviance. By applying social and criminological theories to a broad range of deviant behaviors—from criminal acts to extreme everyday behaviors—students will better understand themselves, others, and the society they inhabit.

Why Cottey’s Sociology Program Is Unique.

At Cottey College, the sociological imagination is central to everything we do in our sociology classes. Our courses emphasize application-based learning, preparing students for success in various fields.

What sets Cottey’s sociology program apart is our unique focus on women’s experiences, explored through feminist frameworks, and our critical attention to diversity. As C. Wright Mills noted, “Neither the life of an individual nor the history of a society can be understood without understanding both.”

At Cottey, we empower students to connect their personal experiences with broader social forces, offering a truly distinctive approach to the study of sociology.
