Wireless Network Connection Information

Wireless Network Connection Information

Having a computer on campus is optional because the per-semester technology fee charged to every student provides access to the computer suites and labs. If you have a computer, and you bring it with you to campus, you can connect to our wireless network. Cottey computer technicians will assist students with connection troubleshooting if needed. While most mobile devices will connect to the network, their signal coverage may be less than that of a laptop.

FAQS

What are the computer minimum requirements?
Your computer must meet or exceed these requirements

Operating System: Supports WiFi Protected Access 2 (WPA2)
Wireless Network Card: An 802.11g/n wireless network card supporting WPA2

FYI-In most instances computers manufactured since 2006 will support our security requirements. It is your responsibility to make sure your computer and wireless network card supports the WPA2 standard.

I do not have a computer yet but am thinking about getting one. Does Cottey recommend one?
No. We have found that most name brand computers are adequate as long as they meet or exceed the minimum requirements.

Do I need a word processing program?
Cottey computers use Microsoft Office 2010 & 2013, so you may want to have a compatible word processing package such as Microsoft Office Student Edition.

Can I use a 2.4 GHz cordless phone in the residence halls?
2.4 GHz cordless phones are not permitted in the residence halls as they interfere with the wireless network.

Students are also not permitted to use any personal wireless access points such as wireless DSL routers, AT&T & Verizon MiFi devices, or turning your laptop or phone into a wireless access point. These devices broadcast signals that interfere with the wireless network.
